Stokvel Programme Recruitment – FAQs
- What is the Leruo Stokvel Programme?
It’s a Sanlam Foundation initiative that helps stokvels grow into stronger, more structured, investment-ready collective savings groups. Through masterclasses, one on one mentorship sessions, practical training and hands-on support, it helps stokvels improve how they govern, save, record-keep, plan and grow.
- Who is running the programme?
The programme is run by Sanlam Foundation in partnership with Zevoli Growth Partners.
- How long is the programme?
The programme will run for 12 months, from onboarding through to graduation.
- Is there a cost to participate?
No. The programme will be free of charge, for all qualifying stokvels,,
- Which areas does the programme support?
The programme is open to stokvels based in Gauteng and North West, with a particular focus on Rustenburg and the wider Bojanala area in North West.
- Who can apply?
Established stokvels based in Gauteng or North West that make regular member contributions and are ready to strengthen their governance, financial discipline and investment readiness.
- What are the minimum eligibility requirements?
Your stokvel must:
- have been operating for at least one year
- be based in Gauteng or North West
- have recurring monthly member contributions
- operate a separate stokvel bank account
- need business development support to grow
- and be able to commit to the full 12-month programme journey
- What documents are required when applying?
- Stokvel bank account confirmation
- Proof of monthly collections.
- Your stokvel profile.
- ID copies of stokvel members, submitted through the full online application.
(A founding document/constitution is not required to apply, helping you put one in place, if you don’t already have one, is part of what the programme supports you with.)
- Are newly established stokvels allowed to apply?
This programme is aimed at stokvels operating for 12 months or more with a track record of activity, so newly formed stokvels won’t currently meet the minimum requirement. We however encourage all new stokvels to build that track record and lookout for future calls for application.
- How many stokvels will be selected?
All received applications across Gauteng and North West will go through a detailed screening process, after which only 20 stokvels will be selected to participate in the programmeacross Gauteng and North West. This is a selective, quality-driven cohort rather than a first-come, first-served intake.
- Is funding provided to participating stokvels?
The programme’s core offering is structured, non-financial support: training, mentorship, business development and investment-readiness guidance, rather than a cash grant.
- Will Sanlam invest directly in my stokvel?
Not necessarily, but the programme is designed to help your stokvel become investor ready for any investment opportunities you may want to explore.
- What happens after I submit an application?
Applications go through:
- adjudication,
- shortlisting,
- a panel presentation for shortlisted stokvels,
- assessments for successful applicants,
- an onboarding session,
- a diagnostics assessment,
- and then an individualised growth plan as part of your stokvel’s development process.
Kindly Note: You will be continuously notified during each above-mentioned process.
- Will every applicant be accepted?
No. Only 20 stokvels will be selected for this Cohort
- What is the selection panel looking for?
Operational health, member commitment, ambition to become investment-ready, coachability, and overall fit with the programme’s purpose.
- Can a stokvel that has participated in other programmes still apply?
Yes. Having taken part in other development programmes doesn’t disqualify you, if anything, it can show your stokvel’s commitment to growing.
- What support will selected stokvels receive?
Support is tailored to your stokvel’s maturity and needs, and can include:
- help developing a founding document/constitution,
- establishing governance structures,
- building your stokvel’s brand and marketing persona,
- understanding and choosing suitable savings and investment solutions,
- deepening that understanding through training and mentorship,
- and formalising your stokvel to operate as a structured collective savings group.
- What commitment is expected from participating stokvels?
Selected stokvels are expected to take part in the full 12-month journey, attending sessions, engaging with mentors, participating in all programme activities and applying what they learn, not just the initial onboarding.
- Will activities be virtual or in person?
A mix of both: virtual sessions (for reach and convenience) combined with in-person activities such as workshops and in-person touchpoints in Gauteng and North West.
- When does recruitment close?
Applications close on 28 September 2026.
- Is there an information session for interested stokvels?
Yes. An information session for interested stokvels is planned in early September 2026, the exact date will be confirmed and shared on our social media and WhatsApp channels.
- When does the programme officially start?
Programme kick-off and orientation is expected in late October 2026, the exact date will be confirmed once selection is complete.
- What makes this programme different?
It’s built specifically for stokvels, not generic small businesses and treats them as serious financial institutions. This Cohort will draw on real alumni experience from previous 3 Cohorts so applicants can see proof of the programme impact.
- What is the ultimate goal of the programme?
To help stokvels move from informal savings habits into strong, disciplined, investment-ready collective financial institutions that create lasting wealth for their members and communities.
- Why should our stokvel apply?
If your stokvel is active, organised and ready to grow, Sanlam Foundation, through this programme, will give you structured support, mentorship and tools to strengthen how you save, govern and plan, at no cost.
